Freight Train Blues

from Misfits Migrants and Murders by Jack Warshaw

/

about

Jack, vocal, guitar
Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten, born in 1893, made this world famous song in 1905. Playing guitar upside down, working in the Seeger household years later led young Peggy and Mike Seeger to work out the style and notes
right side up, bringing it before the world. I saw Libba play it at a festival, but it was Peggy's right-side-up playing, almost 60 years ago, now called Cotten picking that I practised and practised 'til I got il down.

lyrics

Chorus
Freight train, freight train run so fast
Freight train, freight train run so fast
Please don't tell them what train I'm on
So they won't know which route I've gone

It's when I die just bury me deep
Way down on old Chestnut Street
So's I can hear old Number 9
As she goes rolling by

Chorus

When i'm dead and in my greve
No more good times will I crave
Place a stone at my head and feed
Tell my friends that I've gone to sleep

Chorus
Break
repeat chorus
